I thought my first half would be the Disney World Half Marathon, but instead I ran the Seattle Half Marathon on December 1st.
Overall I’m glad I ran the Seattle Half Marathon as a training run. I had a great run and even ran up a lot of the hills. The race is pretty small since the course is so challenging and I did not have any problems with running in a large crowd. It was nice to walk down the hill to the staging area, gear check my bag, warm up and then race. There was no confusion and the crowds of people were managable.
In contrast- the Walt Disney World Half Marathon was a little too chaotic for me. Last year I raced my first ever 5K at Walt Disney World and loved it. It was laid back and even though there were a lot of people, it was not too overwhelming. A few days later I cheered on my father and friends as they raced the full marathon and was surprised by how easy the organized chaos was to navigate. But this year for the half marathon it was too much. Maybe it’s just me or it was the fact I was racing, everything just seemed more stressful and confusion.
However, I do not recommend running an official half marathon as a training run for another. I am glad I experienced an acutal timed half marathon race before I traveled to Florida, but I was sore and even more exhausted than usual afterwards. I used the Jeff Galloway training plan from runDisney, which I highly recommend, and made it easy for me to plan my workouts.
Currently, I’m hoping to complete another half, either the Portland Rock ‘n’ Roll or the Seattle, and both the St. Pattys Day Dash and the 12th Man 12K with a few other athletic endevors in between.

Wow, I’ve been at my new job for almost a month and I can’t believe summer is over. Keeping up with life outside if work is somewhat difficult but now that I’ve adjusted to it. I actually enjoy being an adult. Not having homework or other tedious tasks to do on a regular basis makes me realize how much time there is in a day. If the weather were better it would make me more motivated to do more.
My rowing race this past weekend was canceled due to weather and my next is in October after my 8k. I played a few ultimate games in the past month. The most reccent without a sub, so that was both a work out and a challenge. Eventhough my team hasn’t won, we’ve improved leaps and bounds each game which makes me want to get in better shape. Sticking to my training schedule has been hard since the weather has been horrible. But now that my 8k race is getting closer I realize I need to workout or else I will disappoint myself. That’s the beauty of running, it’s you against the clock. No teammates, no excuses, just you and competing against yourself.
Canada here I come!
I start my new job on Tuesday! At this moment, I couldn’t be happier, but there have been some ups and downs.
Transitioning from college graduate to unemployed recent graduate was hard. Not having many friends in Seattle and figuring out what I wanted to do with my life put me in a bad mood. I realized I needed to put myself out there and find a job. After many rejections and no follow ups after interviews, I realized that perseverance and determination will help me get through the process. Looking back on it, this is just the beginning. Even during my job I will have challenges I have to overcome and the lessons I’ve learned through job searching will help me along the way.
Now, I just need to keep rehabing my ankle and train for an 8K in October.
